The Malahat is one of four B.C. communities that broke daily heat records Tuesday as warmer weather settles in for the week.
The Malahat area saw the biggest jump over its old record for July 15 – documenting 32.5 C and crushing the 2018 record of 29.8.
Up Island, Qualicum Beach Airport recorded a daily high of 30.5 C, surpassing the 29.5 set in 2018. Records in that community date back to 1962.
Elsewhere in the province, Squamish saw a record high of 33.7, breaking the 32 C mark set in 2023.
In White Rock, where records have been kept since 1929, residents saw a 32.3 C high, eclipsing the old record of 31.1 set in 1941.
The daily temperature records, tracked and reported by Environment Canada, are derived from a selection of historical stations in each geographic area.
Those same communities continue to enjoy summer sunshine until Friday, with White Rock anticipated to hit a high of 25 C.
Squamish is set to hit a sweltering 31 C again Wednesday and Thursday, cooling some Friday as scattered cloud rolls in.
Qualicum Beach can expect its warmest day Thursday with an anticipated daytime high of 28 C. Victoria and Malahat can expect 27 C both Wednesday and Thursday. Clouds aren’t expected for the South Island until overnight Friday.
The UV index is high or very high across the board.
