A medical issue may be to blame for a crash that saw a Ford flip after hitting a Tesla parked in Oak Bay on Dec. 22.

Police were called to the crash in the 24000 block of Cadboro Bay Road on Dec. 22 just before 2 p.m.

The driver of a Ford Escape hit a parked Tesla, causing the Ford to flip on its roof.

Oak Bay firefighters extricated the driver from the Escape and they were taken by ambulance to Royal Jubilee Hospital with minor injuries, Oak Bay Police Department said in a news release.

Police say alcohol and speed were not factors and the driver reported a potential medical episode. The crash remains under investigation.

Broken curfew leads to arrest

Dec. 22 proved to be a busy day for police in Oak Bay. About 12 hours earlier, around 1:30 a.m., officers on patrol at Cattle Point located a man wanted by Victoria police. The man was wanted on three warrants and found breaching conditions of his curfew. The 60-year-old was arrested and taken to VicPD cells. He is expected to appear in court in February.

Tow home for no insurance

Officers watching for speeders near Beach Drive and Newport Avenue stopped a driver going well beyond the speed limit Dec. 22 around 7:30 p.m. Oak Bay police stopped the driver, clocked at 66 km/h in a 40 zone and subsequently discovered the insurance insurance expired Nov. 3. The driver was ticketed for not having insurance – which comes with a $598 fine – and given a verbal warning for the speed. The driver and vehicle got a tow truck home.

About 90 minutes later, the reason for the consistent presence in the location showed itself once again. Known as an area for speed, officers measured a vehicle moving at a speed of 107 km/h in the 40 zone. The driver was ticketed for excessive speed with a $483 fine and the vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days.

Cannabis catch

A driver faced a pricey stop after trying to evade a counterattack road check on Beach Drive near Newport Avenue on Dec. 20.

Oak Bay police stopped the driver around 7:30 p.m turned into a golf course maintenance parking lot ahead of a roadblock. The officer detected an overwhelming smell of marijuana and saw signs of impairment by cannabis, police said. After a field sobriety test, officers determined the 28-year-old driver’s ability to operate a motor vehicle was affected by a drug. Police located an open package of cannabis within reach of the driver who was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition, a ticket for driving cannabis in the vehicle ($230) and a three-month driving prohibition as per direction on his licence from ICBC. The vehicle was towed and impounded for 24 hours.
