The Township of Esquimalt is undergoing a project to create a community brand that boosts tourism and fosters community pride.
On March 13 and 14, the township held open houses at the Esquimalt Recreation Centre to hear opinions from residents on the future of Esquimalt’s civic identity.
“A community brand is a little bit different than a corporate brand. What we’re trying to do is create a fulsome idea of images, of words, of descriptors that helps set us apart from other neighboring municipalities,” said Tara Zajac, communications manager for the township. “It just gives us a bit of a unique place amongst the many other wonderful communities here in town.”
At the open house, community members had the opportunity to have a say in the new brand name, slogan and colours that will be used in future street banners, signs, posters and ads.
“We haven’t analyzed the results, but certainly what we saw in the room last night was lots of conversation, lots of positive interaction, people understanding what we’re looking for, and putting their ideas down on paper.” said Terése Finegan, the township’s economic development manager.
She said hearing from residents is the first step, and the township will consult with local First Nations and other stakeholders before any final decisions are made.
