West Shore RCMP has reminded the community that electric unicycles are not legal to ride on roadways.

A man was fined over $1,000 by West Shore RCMP after he was caught riding an electric unicycle on the Trans-Canada Highway.

Spotted riding at a "high rate of speed" on Monday, (March 10), the man in his 40s fled from police when he was asked to pull over, explained a statement from Cpl. Nancy Saggar, which notes electric unicycles are not legal to ride on public roads.

He then crashed his unicycle into a cement barrier near the Leigh Road intersection of the Trans-Canada Highway in Langford.

Saggar said the suspect “flipped in the air" upon impact, and was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The unicyclist was issued several fines under the Motor Vehicle Act amounting to over $1,000, including not possessing a driver’s licence, failing to stop for police and having no insurance.

According to the Ministry of Transportation, in B.C. it is illegal to use any electric one-wheeled device, powered hoverboard or skateboard and 'mini motorcycles' on any public roads, bike lanes or sidewalks. They can only be used on private property, in skate parks or on designated trails.
