United Way Southern Vancouver Island (UWSVI) has opened the process for local social service agencies to apply for grants.

Successful applicants receive funding from the pool of donations raised by the organization in the previous year.

The two different grants this year are the programs and services grant and the collective impact, collaboration, and innovation grant.

The programs and services grant is for programs and services that mainly help with the immediate needs of populations in UWSVI’s three areas of action. The areas of action are families, seniors, and people with mental health and addiction challenges.

The new collective impact, collaboration, and innovation grant is meant for groups of organizations that will be collaborating to focus on UWSVI’s areas of action. These grant recipients will be working together on strategic initiatives that create systemic change and lead to social progress.

Eligible and registered charities in good standing can apply for funding for either grant.

The application deadline for the programs and services grant is Feb. 16.

Collective impact, collaboration, and innovation grant applicants must submit a letter of intent by Jan. 22 and selected agencies will be invited to complete an online application by Feb. 16.

UWSVI will prioritize applicants that aim to reduce the impact of poverty on people in the region.

Funding for both grants is for one year starting on April 1 and wrapping up on March 31.

The grant process is the culmination of UWSVI’s fundraising work.

Last year, UWSVI awarded grants to 63 agencies and 77 programs, as well as five youth in action micro-grants.
