“We are living in a time of major global upheaval – on security, on climate, on economic stability – and Canada must be prepared,” says Greaves.

The Liberal Party has found its candidate for the Victoria riding in the coming federal election.

On Feb. 26, the Liberal Party of Canada officially acclaimed University of Victoria associate professor Will Greaves as its candidate in Victoria – a riding held by the NDP since 2006 that includes all of Oak Bay and a portion of Saanich.

At UVic, Greaves specializes in global politics and security, climate and energy issues, Canadian foreign policy and Arctic studies. He also leads three federally funded research groups: the North American and Arctic Defence and Security Network, the Canadian Defence and Security Network and the Network for Strategic Analysis.

“Will is exactly the kind of leader we need right now – deeply knowledgeable, dedicated and ready to fight for Victoria and for Canada,” Al Hurd, the chair of the Victoria Liberal Electoral District Association, said in a news release. “He understands the threats we face and will bring strong leadership on national security, global politics and climate action.”

Greaves lives with his wife and child in Victoria, where he has sat on the CRD's Arts Advisory Council, as well as its Equity, Diversity and Inclusion sub-committee.

“We are living in a time of major global upheaval – on security, on climate, on economic stability – and Canada must be prepared,” Greaves said in the same release. “From housing and affordability to our role in the world, we need serious leadership to meet these challenges head-on.”

The NDP’s Lauren Collins has held the Victoria riding since 2019.
