Five projects empowering youth of African descent in Victoria have been selected for funding through the City’s 2024 International Decade for People of African Descent Youth Grant program.
The grants support initiatives that foster cultural engagement, mentorship, and inclusivity. Among this year’s recipients are a cultural outreach event promoting African traditions and higher education, a documentary examining the impact of beauty standards, a mentorship program connecting youth with professionals of African descent, a baseball tournament honouring Doug Hudlin and a series of tours and arts-based workshops encouraging engagement with public learning spaces.
Grant recipient Aya Behr, supported by Flux Media Gallery, noted the significance of the funding.
“It makes it possible for Black youth to experience art, science, and history they might not otherwise engage with. This enriches their understanding and empowers them to contribute their perspectives and talent.”
