Victoria drivers advised to avoid portions of Gorge Road as work continues

Gorge Road transportation improvements expected to finish in May

Paving continues through the end of March into early April on the Victoria portion of Gorge Road.

Residents can expect noise and lane shifts, as traffic impacts continue during Gorge Road improvements in Victoria.

Weather permitting, milling – grinding and removing the existing asphalt – and paving are planned for the week of March 26 to 29 on Gorge from Rock Bay Avenue to Dunedin Street, with Gorge Road open to one lane of traffic each way.

Drivers can expect single-lane alternating traffic on Gorge and one lane open in each direction on Jutland on April 2 and 3, as work continues in northbound lanes on Jutland Road from Gorge to Cecelia Road.

Crews will be removing existing sidewalks, installing electrical lines and pouring new curbs and sidewalks as well as new road lines.

With rain forecast for Victoria, residents are reminded some activities are weather-dependent, and timing could change.

The project aims to improve transportation on Gorge Road from Blanshard Street to Harriet Road and includes protected bike lanes, road paving, bus stop and accessibility upgrades, new and upgraded crosswalks, traffic signal upgrades, right turn slip lane removal, landscaping, fibre optic cable upgrades and underground water main replacement.

The project expands the All Ages and Abilities cycling network by over two kilometres, providing a connection to the Galloping Goose Regional Trail, the Government Street protected bike lanes, Kings and Haultain cycling routes and to future bike lanes planned on Gorge Road in Saanich.

This work marks the last major paving planned for this project, the city said, scheduled to finish in May.
