Victoria fire crews douse smouldering garbage truck fire

Truck driver calls 911, parks in front of Victoria fire hall

An early morning trash fire saw a speedy resolution after a Victoria garbage truck driver noticed their smouldering payload and headed for the Victoria fire hall.

The garbage truck fire was dealt with “safely and efficiently” early Thursday (Jan. 23) morning after a truck driver on his rounds noticed the fire around 6 a.m., according to a social media post by Victoria Fire.

“The driver noticed smoke coming from the truck and immediately called 911. Thinking on his feet, the driver drove straight to the firehall at 1025 Johnson St. and parked out front. The fire chief, who was in his office, called down to the driver and told him that crews were on their way down. Firefighters directed the driver to reposition the truck away from the building for safety,” the department post reads.

“Fire crews wasted no time and extinguished the smouldering garbage, preventing growth of the fire and ensuring minimal damage to the truck.”

No injuries were reported.
