As a part of its Back to School Stock Up campaign, the Shelbourne Community Kitchen hopes to raise $12,000 to ensure over 500 young learners have access to nutritious meals and snacks.

“We are asking for cash donations, which allow us to purchase fresh produce, dairy and other perishable items that are essential for a balanced diet,” said Kim Cummins, the non-profit's director of operations.

Founded in 2012, the Kitchen helps children and low-income adults access healthy grub. In 2023 alone, it distributed 70,314 pounds of food and served 1,449 adults and 512 children.

Clarice Dillman, one of the non-profit's board members, emphasized the Kitchen's work is more important than ever.

“With rising housing and food costs, providing nutritious meals for children has become more difficult, putting many kids at risk of going to school hungry,” she said.

A $25 donation will ensure one child gets healthy snacks, including yogurt cups, fruit and veggies, while $50 will get them a whole-grain sandwich or a wrap filled with healthy proteins, in addition to a slew of snacks. And for $100, children also get a lunchbox, a thermos and reusable containers.

The campaign, which the non-profit launched this year, runs from Aug. 26 to Sept. 7.
