The cost of caring for 80 cats and kittens can add up, and the Victoria Pet Adoption Society is asking for the public's help to feed the 80 felines in its care.

Currently, the non-profit, which rehabilitates and helps foster homeless animals, goes through $200 worth of cat food (48 cans) a day.

To help meet its needs, the society has asked the public to donate two types of cat food: Royal Canin Kitten and Purina Essential Care Kitten.

“The reason we’re looking for those particular ones is because once we have the animal on a particular food, we prefer not to change,” said the non-profit's executive director Cat. “It can be upsetting for their stomach if we have them on something for a week and then we run out of that brand and we switch them to something else.”

However, the non-profit won't say no to other brands.

“We can always find an animal that can benefit from whatever food is donated,” said Cat. “We have a lot of feral cats that we feed, and we also have other pets in foster homes unrelated to the kittens that also have different dietary needs.”

Monetary donations are always accepted, too, which help offset the cost of food.

Looking after cats goes far beyond feeding them. Every month, the society accrues approximately $10,000 in veterinary bills, and monetary donations help offset these costs.

Monetary donations can be made here, and food can be dropped off at the Royal Oak Pet Clinic in Saanich.
