VicPD officers made 42 arrests and recovered nearly $10,000 in stolen merchandise during the third iteration of Project Lifter, a four-day operation conducted on Dec. 6-7 and 13-14.
The operation, which targets repeat and violent retail theft offenders, marks continued efforts to address a growing issue affecting local businesses and consumers.
Launched in December 2023, the three-year pilot increases police capacity for targeted enforcement. To date, the initiative has resulted in 174 arrests over 15 operational days and the recovery of more than $50,000 in stolen goods.
Among those arrested during the latest operation were a suspect apprehended twice within an hour and another previously arrested in a prior Project Lifter operation.
“We are committed to addressing the challenges posed by repeat and violent theft and sending a clear message that these behaviours are not acceptable,” said VicPD chief Del Manak. “Our work is not finished.”
While charges are being recommended for many offenders, some have been referred to a restorative justice program. This initiative fosters accountability and resolution by providing a structured environment for dialogue between offenders and those impacted, enabling collaborative steps toward meaningful reparation.
