Shelbourne Street, between Bay Street and Hillside Avenue, has re-opened to all road users after a two-month closure for road safety improvements and necessary maintenance.
In early August, city crews began important maintenance at the intersection of Shelbourne Street and Haultain Street to replace end-of-life traffic signal poles, increase lighting and improve accessibility.
The city also used this time to complete other work along the corridor, including installing bike lanes, repainting roads, maintaining pavement and sidewalks, trimming trees, and putting up signs, while coordinating with Capital Regional District and District of Saanich projects.
“Closing Shelbourne Street meant we accomplished significantly more work in a shorter time while keeping workers safe,” said Ross Kenny, assistant director of transportation.
Concrete curbs will be installed later this year to further protect the new bike lanes and improve the connection to protected bike lanes currently under construction in Saanich. This project closes a significant gap in a key north-south cycling route, giving people safer and more convenient options to travel between Victoria and Saanich.
All of Shelbourne Street is identified in Victoria’s Official Community Plan, and larger-scale upgrades are planned for this corridor following future underground utility work.
