Japanese treats will be available at the Japanese Cultural Fair on Aug. 24 at the Gorge Park Pavilion.

Martial arts, a Japanese cafe and a J-Pop idol group: these cultural infusions and more will imbue the Esquimalt Gorge Park & Pavilion for the 25th Japanese Cultural Fair on Saturday, Aug. 23.

“It’s always exciting to come back,” said Debbie Ibaraki, acting president of the Victoria Nikkei Cultural Society, who hosts the event. "This is an important location for our community."

The Takata family operated a Japanese garden and tea house in the park from 1907 until they were sent to an internment camp during World War II. The park remains a significant area for the Japanese community, and the event celebrates that.

“This year, we are expanding the outdoor areas with a community market, and offering more attractions for the whole family. You can spend the whole day learning and enjoying traditional Japanese art and of course, delicious Japanese food," Ibaraki said.

The pavilion will be filled with demonstrations, lectures, and performances, including Ikebana, the art of flower arrangement; martial arts; live music; Koto and Shakuhachi performances; presentations, including on manga and anime; a silent auction; and a Japanese cafe serving Taiyaki parfait, ice cream floats and Dorayaki.

Activities outside the pavilion include: Uminari Taiko; a tea ceremony; Yukata dressing by the Japanese Friendship Society; a Japanese garden tour; kids' activities; a performance by J-Pop idol group MagiaNote; a community market; food vendors; dancers; and a Japanese classic car exhibit.

The fair runs from 9:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Entry is by donation, with all proceeds to go towards VNCS programs, cultural initiatives and advocacy efforts.

Parking is limited, so biking, taking public transit, and carpooling are encouraged. Visit vncs.ca for more details.
