A nine-year-old boy from View Royal has been using his voice to raise money for the Saanich Peninsula Lions Food Bank.

Weston Green has sung Christmas carols the past four years during the holidays outside of Tanner’s Books in Sidney and has raised a total of $1,184 for the food bank.

“It brings people joy,” Green said. “The people at the food bank were very happy and grateful. I just want to help.”

Green was inspired to raise money for the Saanich Peninsula Lions Food Bank after hearing about people losing their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also knows the important role the food bank continues to play in the community.

“They dish out food to the people who need it,” Green said. “Some people don’t have enough money to buy the food they need, but they can go to the food bank.”

Green raised $253 this year singing classics such as Frosty the Snowman, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town and We Wish You a Merry Christmas.

“It went great again,” Green said. “A lot of people stopped. They said I have a beautiful voice.”

He wanted to hold the fundraiser in Sidney because he often goes to the town to visit his grandmother, Susan Gnucci, who backs up the carolling by ringing bells.

“Tanner’s Books is very supportive,” Green added.

Green says he only likes singing around Christmas and his favourite song is A Holly Jolly Christmas.

He plans to continue this holiday tradition, so Sidney residents can watch out for him next year in front of Tanner’s Books.
