View Royal paddling event cancelled after tragic drowning

In the wake of tragedy, a paddling event set for Sunday will no longer take place.

The casual group paddle in Greater Victoria’s second annual What’SUP Witches event at Thetis Lake is cancelled out of respect for a swimmer who drowned Friday in the View Royal park.

West Shore RCMP were called to the lake on Sept. 29 around 3:40 p.m. after witnesses saw a person go underwater and not resurface, police said in a statement.

View Royal Fire Rescue recovered a body from the water and police have advised BC Coroners Service.
