Volunteers join forces to remove invasive plants from Oak Bay park

The Greater Victoria Green Team hosts public space cleanups weekly on Saturday

The Greater Victoria Green Team (GVGT) and the District of Oak Bay took aim at invasive plants in Anderson Hill Park on Saturday, Aug. 10.

A total of 27 community members removed 22 cubic metres of invasive plant material and flammable debris, enough to fill two cement trucks, from a 205 square metres area of sensitive Garry oak ecosystem.

Armed with their litter-collecting tools, the GVGT also removed trash from the park to help make it safer and embellish the surrounding area.

Anderson Hill Park has been stewarded by Christina Johnson-Dean since 1993. She has been organizing volunteer activities in this park to remove invasive plants to create space for native species and is joined every Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., by a dedicated group of volunteers.

For those interested in partaking in GVGT’s next cleanup, the event will take place on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 9:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. in View Royal's Stoneridge Wetland Park.
