A group of 22 volunteers removed eight cubic metres of invasive plants from a View Royal park, which they say is a testament to the positive impact community members can create through collective action.
On Saturday, Aug. 24, the Greater Victoria Green Team hosted an activity to remove invasive plants, which they say was equivalent to the volume of 50 bathtubs, from Stoneridge Wetland Park in View Royal where they removed Himalayan blackberry and parrot's feather plants.
"A dedicated neighbour steward, who has been committed to this restoration project for years, expressed deep appreciation for the progress achieved. The collaborative efforts have made a significant impact on the invasive parrot’s feather, and she now believes that full eradication by the end of this year is within reach," noted a news release from the team.
"Despite the intense focus on the task at hand, the day was enlivened by three young children under six, who enjoyed a lively soccer game along the park path, infusing the event with a sense of joy and energy."
The team says activities such as this strengthen bonds between people and nature, and promote both well-being and ongoing environmental care.
"The success of this activity serves as an inspiring example of how local residents can come together to make a tangible difference," noted the release.
