There were reports of a cougar sighting yesterday (July 20) approximately one kilometre from Camosun College’s Lansdowne Campus.

A post on Camosun College’s Twitter stated the cougar was spotted near Allenby Park at Dean Avenue and Townley Street.

The post said conflicts between humans and cougars are very rare, and encouraged residents to make themselves as big as possible, back away slowly and secure small pets and children during a cougar encounter.

This is not the first report of a big cat roaming around the district recently. Last week, there were two cougar sightings within 10 hours near PKOLS. Members of Saanich PD responded to both calls but did not locate the wild cat.

If a cougar is spotted, report it to the Saanich Police Department at 250-475-4321 and B.C. Conservation Services at 1-877-952-7277.
