It’s that time of year again when an energetic spirit and over 8,000 runners fill Oak Bay and Victoria streets for the Royal Victoria Marathon.

Since 1980, the races have been held on Thanksgiving weekend and this year is just like any other with the exception of an additional 5K run being added to the lineup.

On Oct. 7, the new 5K will start at 9 a.m. and the Thrifty Foods Kids Run will start at 10:15 a.m. Both races will start and finish at Willows Beach Park in Oak Bay, but the kids’ run is only along Esplanade Street. Beach Drive from Lansdowne Road to Estevan Street will be closed from 8:45 a.m. to 10 a.m.

On Oct. 8, the full and half marathons will start at 8 a.m., while the 8K will start at 7:15 a.m. Bellevillie Street to Oswego Street from Government Street will be closed from 9 a.m. on Oct. 7 and until 6 p.m. on Oct. 8. Access to the Coho will be maintained via Superior Street and Oswego Street, but the City of Victoria has advised residents to expect delays and allow for extra travel time.

On the roads closed for the races, parking will be prohibited and parked vehicles will be towed. Parking will reopen after the final runners pass through each section.

Getting around James Bay before 8:30 a.m., drivers can head east on Simcoe Street or Toronto Street then to Douglas Street and turn left. After 8:30 a.m. drivers can also take Superior Street, and Michigan Street. Most of the streets will be open expect around Inner Harbour and James Bay.

The city asks that travellers plan ahead and if anyone chooses to watch the race, walking, biking, and transit are recommended ways to get to a viewing spot.
