A charity gala hosted by the West Shore RCMP has raised $65,000 for cancer research.

The money raised will support pediatric cancer research and Camp Good Times, a medically assisted camp which allows patients and their families to enjoy camp while undergoing cancer treatment.

Organized in support of Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock, the annual 1,200-kilometre cycling fundraiser, the event was held at the Westin Bear Mountain Resort and Spa on Oct. 3.

The event was attended by a number of local dignitaries, including Colwood Mayor Doug Kobayashi, Langford-Highlands MLA Ravi Parmar and District of Highlands Mayor Ken Williams, who tickled the ivories for entertainment.

"Thank you to everyone who supported the cause," said the West Shore RCMP in a news release.

A cheque for the amount raised at the gala was recently presented to Matthew Campbell, director of Cops for Cancer, and Shelly Slaughter of the Canadian Cancer Society.

This year's Tour de Rock fundraiser ended in Victoria on Oct. 4, after 14 days on the road, raising $803,000.

Sixteen law enforcement and emergency services personnel and media personalities took part in the epic challenge, which made stops at events across Vancouver Island to engage communities and schools.
