The West Shore RCMP are letting the public know officers will be out on Highway 14 in Langford on Thursday, July 25 doing distracted driving checks.
"This is our attempt to give the public fair warning," said Cpl. Nancy Saggar, calling it a "campaign of awareness."
Though the idea is to educate the public and not "slam people with tickets," Saggar said a distracted driving ticket carries a $368 fine. And it includes four points against a persons driving license.
"Which is pretty hefty," Saggar said. "It's quite a serious fine."
Saggar couldn't give an exact time, but said officers would be out sometime in the afternoon, likely between 1 and 5 p.m. and would be visible in their police cars with volunteers from ICBC and the Speed Watch program to help spot distracted drivers.
"It's going to be pretty obvious," Saggar said.
Police will most likely be set up somewhere near the intersection of Goldstream Avenue and Highway 14.
"Please put the phone away," Saggar said. "Distracted driving is one of the leading contributors of fatal car crashes in the province of B.C."
