In the bustling heart of downtown Victoria, the art scene is about to be reinvigorated with the return of Art Victoria Now. Hosted by the Victoria Arts Council (VAC), this much-anticipated exhibition will transform The Bay Centre into a haven for art enthusiasts and artists alike from May 11 to 31.
A celebration of Greater Victoria’s vibrant and diverse artistic talent, Art Victoria Now will showcase everything from drawing, painting and photography to printmaking, textiles and sculpture. A special Youth Artists section will shine a spotlight on the next generation of artists.
“Our mission has always been about connecting artists with audiences,” says Kegan McFadden, the Executive Director of the Victoria Arts Council. “Art Victoria Now serves as a crucial platform for artists at all levels to showcase their work, especially at a time when galleries are closing and opportunities are becoming scarce.”
A call to artists
The exhibition welcomes artists aged 11 to 111+ to apply; 50 will be selected to exhibit their work. With a focus on dynamic and conversation-starting pieces, the VAC looks to curate a show that speaks to the current and future dialogues in art.
“We’re looking for images that resonate with our 2024 audience, that spark discussions and challenge perceptions of what ‘Victoria’ artists create,” McFadden explains.
The Victoria Arts Council has been a cornerstone of the local art community since 1968, providing advocacy, opportunities and platforms for artists to engage with audiences. Through exhibitions, lectures and publications like their digital magazine UNTIL, the VAC supports hundreds of artists annually.
Art Victoria Now underscores the VAC’s commitment to a sustainable, inclusive and empowering art community. With no restrictions on artwork size or price, the event is a testament to the Council’s principle of making art accessible.
Volunteer possibility
The Victoria Arts Council welcomes volunteers for the exhibition, and thanks sponsors like The Bay Centre for helping foster cultural engagement within Victoria.
Looking ahead, McFadden envisions a more supportive environment for artists and art organizations in Victoria. “The dream is to have a dedicated space where artists can create, exhibit and engage in education all under one roof. We need our elected officials to recognize and support the arts as a vital part of our community through infrastructure with long term benefits in mind.”
With its public reception and community celebration set for May 11 and an awards ceremony May 25, Art Victoria Now promises to be a highlight of the cultural calendar.
