A new era for Capital Iron: Honouring the past, embracing the future

For generations, Capital Iron has been an integral part of Victoria’s landscape, a place where families could find everything from hardware and home goods to outdoor living essentials.

Since its founding in 1934 as an iron salvaging company, Capital Iron evolved into a beloved general store, cherished by the community. But as times changed, so too did the retail landscape, and in December 2022, the doors of Capital Iron were set to close for good.

It was a moment of heartbreak for many, but for one man, it was an opportunity – a chance to save not just a business, but a piece of Victoria’s history.

A visionary's journey

Fred Aram, the new owner of Capital Iron, understands the importance of history and tradition.

"Capital Iron is iconic," Fred says with conviction. "It's more than just a business; it's a piece of Victoria’s history. The thought of that legacy disappearing was heartbreaking."

Fred, who immigrated to Canada from Iran at the age of 27, has always believed in the power of hard work and determination. After building a successful career in the appliance industry, he knew he wanted to do something more – something that would make a lasting impact. "

When I saw that Capital Iron was about to close, I felt a deep sense of responsibility to preserve it," Fred shares. "But I also saw an opportunity to transform it into something new, something that would honour its history while also embracing the future."

A new beginning

The reimagined Capital Iron Home Store is the result of Fred's vision and passion.

Now, it’s not just a store – it’s seven stores in one, offering the best in indoor and outdoor living. "We decided to concentrate on what we do best," Fred explains. "Furniture, appliances, outdoor kitchens, fireplaces – these were all part of Capital Iron’s past, and now they are part of its future."

But more than just products, Fred wanted Capital Iron to be a community hub, a place where people could come together, make memories, and find inspiration.

"I wanted to create a store that offers the best in home living, but also one that is deeply connected to the community," he says. "This is a place where tradition meets innovation, where history is honoured, and the future is embraced."

A commitment to community

Fred’s journey to revitalizing Capital Iron is deeply rooted in his belief in the importance of community.

"Canada is a land of opportunity," Fred reflects. "I've always believed that if you're willing to work hard, you can build something meaningful. For me, Capital Iron is that something meaningful. It’s a way for me to give back to the community that has given me so much."

A celebration of tradition and innovation

As Capital Iron Home Store prepares for its grand opening Sept. 21, the excitement is contagious! The event will feature a weekend of everything that makes the store a wonderful place. It’s a celebration not just of a store, but of a legacy, a community, and a bright future.

"I invite everyone to come and experience the new Capital Iron for themselves," Fred says with a smile. "Together, we can continue to make history."
