Founded in New York in 2006, Shen Yun has become a global phenomenon. What began with a single touring company has grown into eight, each with its own live orchestra. Leagh Barkley, who attended Shen Yun for the first time during a March 24 matinee in Vancouver, said she “loved the wide range of styles. We were able to see and experience Chinese traditional dance through whimsical and playful scenes as well as very serious themes too.” She added that it was a rare opportunity to witness an art form so rich in tradition and steeped in history.
Philip Lieberman, a member of the board of directors of the National Ballet of Canada, echoed these sentiments after seeing Shen Yun in Toronto. “The message that Shen Yun is bringing to the world is one of inclusiveness, of something bigger, that brings us all together,” Lieberman said. “We need that now.”
Vancouver will host six performances of Shen Yun at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre from April 9 to 13.
