The Thrifty Foods Cloverdale team raises funds each year for the Victoria Women's Transition House.

Thrifty Foods Cloverdale is supporting the community through Women’s Transition House, an organization providing critical resources for women and families in need. Over the past three years, fundraisers spearheaded by staff at the Cloverdale store have raised thousands of dollars, collected hundreds of toys, and sparked countless conversations about the importance of giving back.

The first fundraiser in March 2021, led by Front-End Manager Darcey Keck, set the tone for what would become a tradition. Staff wore purple shirts in recognition of International Women’s Day, contributing donations. Customers joined in the effort, and signs at the tills highlighted the local impact of their contributions. “It was a great way to start the conversation at the till and support an important cause.”

That success led to the launch of a toy drive during the holiday season, with decorated bins for unwrapped gifts and signs at every checkout.  “It was amazing to see both staff and customers come together to make a difference.”

The initiative has grown each year, reaching new heights in December 2023. A combination of posters, pamphlets outlining Women’s Transition House’s programs, and enthusiastic staff engagement brought in donations and 110 toys. “This year, we saw gifts for all ages, not just for little kids,” Keck shares. “It was something special to see the community think about everyone.”

Cash donations are loaded onto gift cards, which are included in Holiday Hampers distributed by the Transition House. Leftover funds support families as they move into housing, while the toys brighten birthdays and holidays for children living in the shelter throughout the year.

The personal stories that emerge from these drives underline their impact. Keck recalls one moment during the purple shirt campaign when a part-time clerk donated. “We gave them a thank-you card, and they told us how much the Women’s Transition House had helped them in the past,” she says. “It’s moments like that which drive me to keep doing this.”

The store’s efforts don’t stop there. Fundraisers have also supported 1Up Single Parent Resource Centre and the Boys and Girls Club. “1Up does weekly markets for their clients and custom Holiday Hampers for families,” Keck explains. “These organizations are doing incredible work, and we’re proud to support them.”

“I’ve been so lucky to work with amazing store managers who encourage me,” she said. “It’s truly a team effort, and I’m grateful to be part of a team and community that cares so much.”
