Unplug and play in Esquimalt parks this summer, with free storytimes, teddy bear picnics, games and endless family fun.

This summer, Esquimalt’s parks are more than just green spaces – they’re places of imagination, laughter and connection. Through a lineup of free, family-focused events, Esquimalt Parks and Recreation is inviting the community to slow down, unplug and enjoy the simple joy of being outdoors together.

Whether it’s listening to a story under a tree, sipping pretend tea with a teddy bear or playing lawn games in the sun, there’s something for every little explorer to enjoy. Here's a look at what's planned!

Storytime beneath the trees
Held every Wednesday morning at Saxe Point Park, Summer Stories in the Park is designed for children aged two to five, though all ages are welcome. Each session begins with a story from a Canadian author, followed by a themed craft or activity that brings the story to life.

From Robert Munsch’s beloved antics to the gentle reflections in A Garden Called Home, each tale is handpicked to spark curiosity and creativity. Plus, kids can collect a sticker each week as part of the summer stories passport – a fun way to keep track of their literary adventures.

Teddy bears, friends and fun
On July 7, Captain Jacobson Park will transform into a whimsical setting for the annual Teddy Bear Picnic. Running from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., this charming event invites families to bring their favourite stuffed animal and enjoy crafts, games and activities such as a teddy bear show & tell, bear walk, button making, stories and games.

“Events like this are all about making memories,” says Community Development Programmer, Tara Silva. “It’s not just about the tea – it’s the sense of magic and play that kids remember.”

Play Time in the park
And to round out the summer season, Play Time! will take over Memorial Park on Aug.11. From 11 a.m. to noon kids can enjoy outdoor games, light sports equipment and plenty of space to run and play – all under the supervision of friendly staff.

It’s all part of Esquimalt’s commitment to creating free, accessible opportunities for families to enjoy their community. No screens, no schedules – just time together in the fresh air.
