Applications for the Victoria Foundation's Vital Grants stream of its Community Grants Program are welcome through March 11.

Non-profit organizations across the capital region are working tirelessly to strengthen our community's long-term resilience, fostering social, cultural and environmental impacts in areas ranging from the arts and children's health to affordable housing and gender equity.

The two grant streams of the Victoria Foundation's Community Grants Program are designed to support that vital work, providing up to $30,000 in flexible, general operating funds for local non-profit and charitable sectors. Applications for the first stream – Vital Grants – are welcome now and will be accepted through March 11, with applications for the Collaboration Grant stream following this fall.

How are the funds put to use?

Among the array of local projects funded last year were an inner-city food hamper program, a seed security initiative, a youth suicide prevention program and a coastline restoration project. There were initiatives to promote digital literacy and online safety, programs to enhance seniors' sense of belonging, and others offering mentorship for Indigenous youth.

In all, a record $6.19 million was distributed to help 252 non-profits, including 179 organizations or projects that significantly benefit equity-deserving groups. This funding included $1.3 million from the Government of British Columbia through the Community Prosperity Fund.

“We’re pleased that the program continues to grow as one of the Foundation’s flagship initiatives, as we build our capacity to help address root causes, through our granting, of some of our region’s most complex challenges,” explains CEO Sandra Richardson.

This year's funding is informed by the 2024 Vital Signs issue areas, sector reports and other community input on pressing needs, with a grant process emphasizing the principles of trust-based philanthropy, which promote equity, centre relationships and increase accessibility.

Help create a healthy, resilient community today

Of course, none of this vital work would be possible without the support of donors. When people give to the Grants Program through the Community Actions Funds, their generous gifts are routed to the best possible places in the community.

In addition to the opportunity to direct donations to specific areas of interest, such as the arts or the environment, donors can also choose options like the Vibrant and Caring Community Fund, which works to bolster projects, programs, and services in all areas of greatest need in our region.
