What goes where when it comes to your recycling and waste? A new site from the CRD makes it easy!

Have you ever bought something and then stared at the packaging, wondering “Where does this go?” Or used an item for years – like your mattress or TV – and now don't know how to dispose of it properly?

The Capital Regional District has a comprehensive, easy-to-use solution!

With so many materials and disposal options, it’s easy to feel unsure about what goes in your curbside bins and what needs a special trip to a depot. To answer those questions, the CRD has launched What Goes Where, replacing the former myrecyclopedia.ca. With more items included – more than 350 items in all! – the handy new resource shares how to dispose of your stuff responsibly, whether you live in a house, condo or apartment.

So, what goes where?

From everyday items like glass and plastics to trickier items like batteries, clothing and electronics – not to mention product packaging like Styrofoam or coffee cups –  What Goes Where makes it easier than ever to find the right disposal method.

You'll even find suggestions for donation facilities for reusable items before listing recycling or garbage options, helping you make more sustainable choices.

Getting started is simple:

  1. On your phone, tablet, or computer, visit: www.crd.ca/whatgoeswhere.
  2. Use the search bar to type in the item you want to get rid of.
  3. Click on the suggested material or hit search.
  4. You’ll see whether it belongs in your garbage, recycling, or organics bin – or if it needs to be taken to a depot or reuse store.
  5. Can’t find what you’re looking for? Suggest a new item to the CRD team directly through the tool or by emailing infoline@crd.bc.ca.

Help it grow
What Goes Where is a living, ever-evolving resource. As new products and packaging emerge, the CRD will update the tool with your help. If you have questions or notice a missing material, send your feedback through the tool or email the team.

Sorting waste properly doesn’t have to be a guessing game. Visit What Goes Where today at www.crd.ca/whatgoeswhere and make disposing of your unwanted stuff easier, smarter and greener.
