While federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre eyes a byelection in Alberta, he could be facing a leadership review by party members as early as January.
First reported by the Globe and Mail Monday (June 16), a clause in the Conservative Party of Canada’s constitution states that after losing a federal election, the party is to determine if they wish to keep their party leader or begin the process of finding a new leader.
According to reports, the next national convention could be January 2026.
The Conservative Party of Canada leader currently doesn't hold a seat in parliament.
Poilievre is awaiting a byelection in the Alberta riding of Battle River-Crowfoot after failing re-election in his riding of Carleton in Ontario – a riding he'd previously held since 2004. He lost by around 4,000 votes to Liberal newcomer Bruce Fanjoy.
Damien Kurek, currently MP for the Battle River-Crowfoot riding, has said he will resign for Poilievre to run. Kurek won the riding on April 28 with about 80 per cent of the vote.
