BC Transit has been spreading the net wide in its bus driver recruitment efforts, but today (Oct. 30) it is focusing on people in one segment of the workforce who may be looking to make a career change.
From noon to 4 p.m. at the Inn at Laurel Point, BC Transit is hosting a recruitment event for people in the hospitality industry, many of whom have the skills desired by the bus company, especially customer service.
Sarah White, one new driver who transitioned from the hospitality sector, will be on hand to offer her thoughts on making the move.
BC Transit, faced with an increasing shortage of drivers due to retirements as well as a need for more operators to cover off its expanded service in the Capital Region, is appealing to tourism workers who may be looking at seasonal layoffs.
In 2017, more than 50 new drivers were hired. BC Transit trains recruits in-house so no previous bus driving experience or commercial licenses are required to begin the hiring process.
The recruitment event is being held in the Merino Room at the hotel from noon to 4 p.m. Stop by to learn more or visit BCTransit.com/drivewithus, call 250-995-5834 or email careers@bctransit.com.
