A $500,000 grant awarded to Camosun College will provide students with opportunities to study and work internationally.
The program is set to launch on April 1, 2022 and close on March 31, 2025 with funding provided by Colleges and Institutes Canada through Global Skills Opportunity. Up to 100 students will be able to participate, including up to 50 Indigenous students.
The funding is designed to remove barriers for people who might not otherwise be able to access overseas learning opportunities, such as Indigenous and low-income students.
“Study and work abroad programs provide students with invaluable learning experiences, especially in an increasingly globalized world,” said Camosun president Sherri Bell in a release. “Camosun will leverage the funding from Global Skills Opportunity to provide more students with transformational experience abroad that can help shape the way they live and work.”
The grants aim to support the on-the-land component of the new Ways in Indigenous Leadership and Learning certificate, progressing as a collaboration between the Centre for Indigenous Education and Community Connections (Eyēʔ Sqȃ’lewen) at Camosun and the Ara Institute in New Zealand.
“Enabling students to engage in on-the-land learning, here and in Aotearoa (New Zealand), will open doors – and hearts and minds – for the students in this exciting program. That will support them to do the same for those they lead in the future,” said centre director Janice Simcoe.
Global Skills Opportunity is funded by the Government of Canada’s Outbound Student Mobility pilot program. To learn more visit globalskillsopportunity.ca.
