Residents of two apartment buildings in Esquimalt were evacuated Tuesday morning after an excavation site next door collapsed.

Residents at 656 Admirals Rd. and 665 Constance Rd. were evacuated at approximately 9 a.m. Tuesday morning (June 13) after the shoring wall of an excavation site at 666 Admirals Rd. collapsed.

Firefighters are still on scene assessing the damage, and engineers will have to complete a safety assessment before residents are allowed back in the building.

One of the evacuated residents told Black Press Media that there has been “cracked pavement” between their apartment and the construction site for the past two weeks.

Esquimalt assistant fire chief Neal Widdifield said the site is now being assessed by engineers so a plan can be developed to get the residents back into the building.

“As long as they’re making it safe for the people working here and keeping my tenants safe, that’s all I care about,” a representative of one of the landlords told Black Press Media at the scene.

There have been no reported injuries so far.
