Esquimalt asks for proposals for new policing service

Township looking for options beyond current model provided by Victoria police

Esquimalt today issued a request for proposals for policing its community.

Following an audit by the Public Service Ministry's police services branch and the formation of the Esquimalt Policing and Law Enforcement Advisory Panel, the township is ready to explore other options for policing.

In 2003, policing in Esquimalt was amalgamated with Victoria police, and the latter took over public safety duties for the township.

But the police services audit indicated that although VicPD generally delivered quality policing in Esquimalt, the municipality had the right to explore other options.

More to come.
