Quick thinking neighbours were able to make sure everyone was safe when a fire erupted in a home in the 3200-block of Doncaster Drive Friday morning.
Saanich resident Chris Wagner was on her way to work when she noticed a potted plant burning on the house’s balcony. But before she could park the car and notify her neighbour, the blaze had spread. She called 911 and quickly entered the home alongside three other neighbours to ensure no one was inside.
One of the house’s six residents had been asleep when the fire erupted – but made it out with no injuries. Firefighters arrived on scene shortly after 8 a.m. to extinguish the fire.
“Being late for work isn’t always a bad thing, I guess,” Wagner said.
Saanich Fire Assistant Deputy Chief Michael Kaye said damage to the home is quite substantial and extended to the roof trusses. The fire spread through much of the attic of the home and there is quite a bit of fire, smoke and water damage.
Investigators remained on scene to determine the cause of the fire.
