The Bella Bella-based Haíɫzaqv Nation is grieving the passing of two distinguished matriarchs, who sadly lost their lives in a car accident during a hailstorm north of Campbell River last Wednesday (March 12).
Leona and Valerie Humchitt were pronounced dead at the scene after their SUV left the road near Brown’s Bay and hit some trees. Two others in the vehicle were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
A post on the Clean Energy BC website recognized the legacy of Leona Humchitt, who was a dedicated advocate for clean energy initiatives.
"Leona’s leadership advanced clean energy solutions, strengthened community resilience, and championed a better future for generations to come," reads the post. "Her dedication to the well-being of her Nation and the lands and waters they steward was an inspiration to all who had the privilege of working alongside her.
New Relationship Trust, a not-for profit aimed at empowering First Nation communities, called Leona a true inspiration and role model.
"Although small in stature, she was a giant – a pillar of the Bella Bella community and a friend to all who crossed her path," notes the post. "Both selfless and tireless, Leona exemplified the values that were instilled in her from a young age and dedicated her life to lifting up Bella Bella and the Heiltsuk people. She was a true inspiration and role model to those of us who worked with her."
Community member and friend Mary Brown said the women, who were sisters-in-law, leave the community with a legacy of unwavering love and strength.
"They guided us and instilled the values that we will hold close to our hearts," Brown said. "Their warm smile always had a way of making everyone feel loved and comfortable. They taught us the importance of kindness, and both had a great sense of humour.
"The lessons, teachings, guidance, and love will remain with all their family and friends. Their memories will be tuck tucked away safely with each individual."
A memorial in Bella Bella will be held on March 24, with the funeral taking place on March 25 at the Bella Bella Community Hall.
