Threats written on an exterior wall of Journey Middle School is the focus of a police investigation, Sooke RCMP say.

Officers were called to the school Tuesday morning when teachers found offensive graffiti scrawls left on the wall.

The message of concern, said Sooke School District superintendent Jim Cambridge, read something like, ‘don’t come to school on Dec. 8’ and ‘I all you kill.’”

Cambridge expects children found chalk left out after school and drew the graffiti Monday night, which was found the next morning.

“Any time we have something like this we treat it seriously, but we also work directly with the school and deal with it appropriately,” said Sooke RCMP Cpl. Joe Holmes.

After an initial investigation, the RCMP concluded the incident was low risk.

“Most of it was pretty typical middle school-aged silliness,” said Cambridge.

He said years ago this wouldn’t have even been reported to the RCMP or parents, but now as word spreads a lot quicker and causes parents to worry, the schools report anything that is concerning.

“My biggest concern is that parents are anxious. We report things of concern through an abundance of caution and the byproduct of that is unnecessarily making parents feel anxious about things that they don’t need to,” said Cambridge.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 250-642-5241 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
