A driver was arrested after travelling on three wheels while impaired before their sparking vehicle caused a midday fire in Saanich on Monday.

Police around 1 p.m. responded to a report about a vehicle travelling with three wheels on West Saanich Road near Quadra Street. Reports about half an hour earlier said the sedan was in the 1,400-block of Admirals Road in View Royal.

Officers found the vehicle in the 4,200-block of Glanford Avenue, where it came to a complete stop after the entire passenger side wheel assembly had broken. Police said the vehicle caused a small grass fire on the shoulder of Glanford Road.

The man driving the car was arrested and blew almost two times over the legal limit during a breath test conducted at Saanich police headquarters.

The man faces multiple recommended charges related to impaired driving.

His lopsided inter-municipal cruise came just days after Saanich police arrested other impaired drivers on the weekend. Those incidents involved at least three impaired individuals and multiple drivers attempting to flee from roadside sobriety stops.
