It’s going to be a party.

On March 31, the City of Victoria is saying “out with the old and in with the new” as they open the new Johnson Street Bridge, nearly 10 years after starting discussions around the project. Dogged by multiple delays and well over its original budget at a current estimated cost of $105 million, the bridge will finally open over the Easter long weekend following a family-friendly event to kick off the new era.

At noon, Mayor Lisa Helps will cut the ribbon on the new bridge and the public is invited to join in the inaugural walk across the bridge, either on foot or bicycle. Two picnics – one planned for each bridge – will follow with food trucks, live music and activities for the kids to celebrate the future and pay tribute to the past.

All the fun will mean both bridges will be closed to vehicle traffic until 5 p.m., when the first vehicles make their own inaugural journey across the new span.
