Saturday marks the 72nd anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor from Japanese forces, the event that thrust the United States from isolation to the frontlines of the Second World War and the moment that – according to many – was the turning point of that nearly six-year series of global conflicts and battles.

Hawaii held a ceremony on Saturday on Oahu, where the attack happened not far from Honolulu, and 2,500 came to pay their respects, starting with a moment of silence at 7:55 a.m. local time.

About 50 of the crowed were veterans of the attack. The ceremony will turn into a parade through Waikiki later on Saturday.
