A man taken into custody after a lengthy police incident at Fisherman’s Wharf was released without charges Wednesday evening.
At around 4 p.m. yesterday, police responded to a report that shots had been fired in the area. Out of an abundance of caution, the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team was utilized along with the VicPD K9 team and crisis negotiators. Officers determined what vessel the man was aboard and detained him sometime after 6 p.m.
A search of the vessel did not uncover any firearm and the suspect was released a short time later.
At least six police vehicles were on scene at the peak of the incident. ERT members were seen making their way along the docks wearing helmets, vests and carrying assault rifles, by dozens of tourists and other onlookers at the wharf and the nearby park.
The parking lot below Shoal Point, and the wharves area mere metres away from the popular dockside eateries in Victoria’s Inner Harbour was taped off to the public during the incident.
Out of an abundance of caution, we used the necessary resources available to make sure everybody was safe. 2/3 #yyj
