As 2022 unfolds, residents can anticipate many roadway improvements taking place on busy Saanich routes.
Roadway safety and the need for upgrades were a common discussion in 2021 and proved to be of utmost importance to district residents as 2022 approached. Many of the upcoming projects are scheduled for this spring or summer.
Gorge Road from Admirals to Tillicum
Improvements to this corridor are on their way with the installation of a bi-directional cycling facility on the south side between Admirals and Tillicum – beginning in the spring or summer.
Upgrades to the north side of the existing sidewalk, the installation of flashing beacons at crosswalks, bus stop improvements and full pavement overlay are part of the project.
Storm drain infrastructure will also be replaced along with improvements to certain areas of the Gorge Waterway Park and foreshore areas.
Vanalman neighbourhood
This project will include road reconstruction, the installation of cycling infrastructure for all ages and abilities, various sidewalk improvements, and underground infrastructure upgrades on Vanalman Avenue between Mann Avenue and Commerce Circle.
Road reconstruction, installation of traffic calming infrastructure and full pavement overlay will take place on that section of Vanalman. A raised intersection will also be installed at Vanalman and Ridgebank Crescent.
Shelbourne Street from North Dairy Road to Pear Street
Phase two of improvements to Shelbourne Street will include full-depth road reconstruction, installation of inclusive cycling infrastructure, sidewalk improvements and underground infrastructure upgrades on Shelbourne between North Dairy and Pear.
The work is part of the Shelbourne Street Improvement Project taking place along this corridor for some time.
Sinclair Road
The replacement of aging underground infrastructure will be installed on Sinclair Road near the University of Victoria. Inclusive sidewalk and cycling infrastructure will be added, along with bus stop improvements, crosswalks with flashing beacons, intersection improvements and full pavement overlay.
Cordova Bay Road
In the forecast are pedestrian and cycling improvements along this corridor between Walema Avenue and Rambler Road. Pedestrian improvements on Fenn Road between Cordova Bay Road and 5250 Parker Ave. are also to come.
Concrete sidewalks will be separated where possible, a full pavement overlay will be laid on Cordova Bay between Walema Avenue and Rambler Road, and traffic calming features will be installed.
West Saanich Road from Sparton to Prospect Lake
The installation of a signalized intersection is coming for the busy intersection of West Saanich, Sparton and Prospect Lake roads.
Sidewalks are to be installed along Prospect Lake between Goward and West Saanich roads, and along Sparton Road between West Saanich and the Prospect Lake Community Hall.
Motorists will also note the addition of traffic calming features.
