Emergency response team negotiators helped bring about a peaceful end to a two-hour standoff in Saanich Thursday evening.
Police went to a home in the 3800-block of Mildred St. to arrest a 21-year-old male for possessing a firearm.
But the man and his mother barricaded themselves inside the home. With the belief that a firearm was inside, police cordoned off the neighbourhood and neighbouring homes were evacuated.
A search warrant was obtained for the residence, and the man was arrested.
No weapons were found inside the home, but police uncovered three-quarters of a kilogram of cocaine hidden in a container.
As of Friday charges against the 21-year-old were still waiting approval.
