A suspect sprayed bear-spray inside a Nanaimo convenience store, stole food and made a getaway last week.

According to a Nanaimo RCMP press release, police and paramedics were called to the 7-Eleven location on Bowen Road at 4:20 a.m. on Wednesday, May 10. Witnesses say a person with their face disguised entered the store and “discharged a canister of bear-spray then stole a small amount of food” and fled the scene.

The workers were treated on scene, required no further treatment and it is not known in which direction the suspect headed.

Officers brought a police dog and searched for the suspect, but were unable to locate him, the press release noted.

Based on closed-circuit TV footage, the suspect is described as a man with a slim build and of medium height. He was wearing a blue jacket, a “distinctive camo hoodie” as well as a face covering. He was also carrying a blue and black backpack.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP’s non-emergency line at 250-754-2345, citing file No. 2023-15549.
