Though she didn't have any competition in the November municipal election, acclaimed Mayor Barb Desjardins spent more on her campaign than the Esquimalt council candidates.
The deadline for candidates to file their financial statements was Monday afternoon.
The paperwork reveals that Desjardins received $4,545 in campaign contributions. Her expenses totalled $4,545, much of which paid for advertising and signage or brochures. She did, however, find herself with a $682 surplus, which she donated to Esquimalt High.
"You never know whether you are going to have an opponent," said Desjardins, who spent money preparing for the campaign in the months leading up to the deadline for candidates to file their nomination papers.
"Take nothing for granted," she said. "You never know when somebody may come forward and you need to be prepared."
Incumbent Coun. Lynda Hundleby spent $3,495.87. She received $3,995 in campaign contributions.
Coun. Tim Morrison doled out $2,881 for expenses, such as advertising and office supplies. He received $2,881 in contributions.
Coun. Dave Hodgins spent $1,858.58, mostly on advertising and signage or brochures. Coun. Bob McKie spent $1,708.62 and received $1,699.
Incumbent Coun. Meagan Brame shelled out $1,683, and received $2,243 in campaign contributions. Her surplus went to the Esquimalt Neighbourhood House.
Coun. Dave Schinbein doled out $380.80 for signage and brochures.
The two council candidates who spent the least money on their campaign did not secure a seat.
Sandra Dixon spent $55 of her own money on signage or brochures, while Josh Steffler spent $50 on similar items.
