A fire investigators suspect was started by a burning candle caused an estimated $60,000 damage to a home at 2303 Quadra Street at Queens Avenue mid-Sunday afternoon.
No one was hurt in the blaze, which was limited to the main floor of the 2-1/2 storey, older wood-frame building, but some occupants were treated on scene by paramedics for smoke inhalation.The fire started in a bedroom and smoke quickly filled the main floor. Crews contained the fire in the bedroom and cleared the home of smoke.
Victoria's Evacuee Assistance team arrived as fire crews were cleaning up, to begin relocation procedures for the eight displaced occupants.
The fire saw Quadra Street closed to traffic for nearly an hour. Three engines, one ladder truck and a fire rescue vehicle were called out, and two B.C. Hydro trucks were on standby at the scene.
Fire department officials reminded all residents to take extra care when using candles, including not leaving them unattended while burning.
