LETTER: Boost of fossil fuels will carry heavy cost to B.C.

It is unfortunate to again read a letter praising the expansion of fossil fuels in B.C.

Re: the letter, 'Investment in natural resources can boost B.C. economy.'

It is unfortunate to again read a letter praising the expansion of fossil fuels in B.C. We know unequivocally that burning fossil fuels is the cause of the changing climate we observe. We know also that the only effective solution we have to stop the harm from increasing further is to stop burning fossil fuels. Expanding extraction and export of fossil gas will increase the harm from climate change here in British Columbia. There is no amount of burned carbon that is too small to matter. Unfortunately then, any short-term 'boost' such expansion may provide our economy will come back to us as vastly increased costs in the future.

We cannot pretend that Canada's contribution to climate change doesn't matter. Canadians are among the worst fossil carbon polluters in the world on an individual basis. There are ultimately no benefits to increased development of fossil gas and oil. Canada and B.C. must show leadership and work quickly to stop this dangerous and harmful industry.
