The CRD intends to establish a regional transportation service by way of adopting Bylaw 4630 via a regional alternative approval process (AAP). Normally, I would not support an AAP as it is not conducive to citizen input and participation; however, in this case, I do support the plan for a regional transportation service if there is a concerted effort to raise transit ridership within and to/from Sooke.
Even during peak times when routes are frequent, it is a long ride to and from downtown Victoria. To get to the airport or ferry terminal from Sooke takes about 2.5 hours and three transfers, if the buses run on time. Early morning routes often don’t start early or late enough to match flights/sailings.
Sooke is the second fastest growing community in the south Island region. This morning, I took the regional transit survey regarding Routes 61 and 65 and the plans for additional routes, which I am strongly in favour of.
I would also recommend: creating a route that allows access to the Sooke Potholes, especially now that the CRD has increased parking fares on site. It is a popular site during the summer, and even a shuttle service would reduce congestion on Highway 14 and support tourism and the CRD priority of improving access to transit park and rides, and parks. Increase 'feeder' routes within Sooke so folks can better access health care, parks, the library, schools, and shop for groceries. Make transit free for seniors and students within Sooke to encourage folks to use transit more and ease congestion on Highway 14. An express route to and from downtown Victoria during peak times would also help increase ridership, given that many of the commuters are government employees. Creating a more efficient way to get to and from the airport and ferry is critical – particularly now that the airport has raised the cost of both short-term and long-term parking.
I also feel that we need a transportation task force in Sooke and would happily volunteer. I won’t oppose Bylaw 4630 – in fact, I think it’s a good step towards improving transit and active transportation in the CRD.
I would like to thank Mayor Tait and council for their continued advocacy and support for Sooke families. Ultimately, all levels of government must work together to solve our transportation challenges and create safer and more efficient modes of people-moving for Sooke and beyond.
