In response to the letter, ‘E-bike riders should have to be licensed' in the July 10 Peninsula News Review.
Many, including myself, have serious misgivings concerning the significant increase in the number of e-bikes and other similar means of transportation. They are commendable in perhaps reducing the number of internal-combustion-powered means of transportation on the roads at any given time.
In my time, bicycles had to display a licence plate. The cost of administration far outstripped the revenue. Well-meaning, however, the requirement was discontinued. It did not reduce bike thefts or identification.
As for insurance, another nightmare for enforcement. I am not aware that any municipality has the wherewithal to fund e-bike cops.
The obligation and responsibility to operate in a lawful manner must come through some form of education for all ages. A start could be at the point of sale. A wake-up call will come as the number and severity of injuries and possibly of death bring your concerns to forefront.
