LETTER: Government tries to control the message

web1_letters-aub-200306-t

Ms. Gee was absolutely correct in her letter stating that Facebook and Instagram are integral to many people, that small media companies, journalists and ordinary citizens are collateral damage to Canada’s new Online News Act and that unfettered power belongs in a dictatorship, not a democracy.

That’s why this act is wholly unconstitutional and suppresses transparency and citizens’ rights to access a wide variety of information and opinions without government as the gatekeeper, dictating what is acceptable. Now Trudeau is bringing in an Online Streaming and Podcasting Act which independent journalists from around the world are decrying as an assault on Canada’s democracy. One only has to look back in history to see which governments employed the heaviest censorship. Ours is well aware that when government controls the message, it controls the people.
